Love Spells
“LOVE IS THE LAW”
Sir Taegen Harris, 21-year old, Singer-Song writer from Houston, Texas also known as Love Spells, has brought his debut album LOVE IS THE LAW to the Constellation Room in Santa Ana, California. You may have heard him on Kevin Abstracts album BLUSH, tracks such as “Post Beauty Break-up”, “Yoko Ono”, and “Doggy”.
Love Spells arrives in Santa Ana following a whirlwind of performances, from Lollapalooza in Chicago, All Points East in London, and All Things Go in Washington, Love Spells has been making his mark in the indie music scene.
LOVE IS THE LAW, released on the 24th of July, is a dreamy mix of indie rock, dream pop, and nostalgia. This album feels intimate, honest, vulnerable, and if that is not love I don't know what is. His sound is distinctly his own, groovy rhythms and hazy dreamlike melodies. It’s the kind of music that draws you in, almost making you overlook just how vulnerable the words really are.
As the band made its way onto the stage, followed by Love Spells, the crowd immediately locked in. It didn’t take long to realize that Love Spells knows how to bring a room together. Between songs, he cracked jokes, interacted with fans, and expressed his gratitude to everyone who showed up, including the welcoming staff at the Constellation Room. There was something effortlessly charming about his presence, making the intimate venue feel even more personal.
From the moment he began singing, the audience was hypnotized by his voice. Love Spells is an absolute gem. Anyone can be an artist, but not everyone can be a performer, and boy, does he know how to bring a room to life. Throughout the night the crowd jumped, swayed, and sang along completely immersed in the music. Everything felt heightened in the best possible way, the energy in that room was impossible to ignore. As fan favorites began to play, I caught glimpses of friends quickly turning toward each other, exchanging knowing looks that seemed to telepathically communicate, THIS is our song. Love Spells even joked about the Lord being in the room, and judging by the crowd's reaction, they seemed to agree.
One of the night's more memorable moments came when Love Spells invited a fan from the first few rows onstage after noticing him matching his energy throughout the show. The fan did not hesitate to show off some impressive dance moves, adding to the playful, carefree atmosphere of the night. Love Spells also declared that everyone in the room now shared the middle name “Groovy”, a fitting title for a crowd that had spent the night completely lost in the rhythm of it all.
Among the night's standout songs, my personal favorites were “Keep It To Yourself”, “Crutch”, and “Heart for Eyes.” Love Spells closed out the night with “I Wish I Didn’t Love You”, a somewhat ironic farewell considering his debut album is literally called LOVE IS THE LAW. Perhaps that’s the beauty of it all: love isn’t always as simple as we’d like it to be.
Love Spells proved that he’s not only a talented singer-songwriter but an incredible live performer. Should he make his way to your city, you won’t want to miss out.
