“Temptress” by Tiffany Johnson

With the title track off of her debut album “Temptress,” Tiffany Johnson tells a story of betrayal and growth from a relationship through chilling imagery and metaphors. An abundance of passion was poured into this project for 3 years, and this song alone is proof that this time not

only paid off but was well worth the wait.

Johnson is based in Nashville, the city of music, but is originally from South Dakota. The blend of cultures from these places really comes through her music and defines her sound as country, pop, and alternative. This lead single is a softer, yet powerful combination of these genres that comes through as incredible and honest storytelling.

When most people hear the word “temptress,” they often think of someone alluring, in an almost vengeful or mysterious way. However, Tiffany redefines a temptress in this song as someone fragile and vulnerable to repercussions that come with the temptations people often worry their partners might fall victim to. The opening lyrics create a chilling image “Rain taps away on your backbone / Wind kicking up against your spine,” following up with “The rage of the storm in your hands now,” which parallels a common reminder to herself throughout the piece that what’s happening to her isn’t her fault.

“And I know it’s not my fault” is a lyrical theme throughout this piece. In the beginning, Johnson soulfully relays this as an attempt to convince herself that this painful and confusing experience was, in fact, not her fault, continuing with “then why does it feel like it is.” By the end of the song though, she sings this line as a definitive statement, ending with “but you like to think that it is,” which is a harsh truth so many people feel when they’ve had to suffer a similar hurt.

People who hurt someone significant in their lives thrive off of turning them into the villain of their story, in order to justify their own actions. Tiffany does a beautiful job at showcasing the pain of this experience. She also wrestles with the reality of this love interest not being the same person she once knew:
“So I walk your memory like a tightrope / trying not to sway to one side / but I’m shaken to my core trying to balance / who you are and who you just were in my mind.”

Lyrics like this create a visual aid to just how back and forth the emotions can be through something that shakes your world around. This line is also sung with the passion that can only come from the sheer frustration and confusion of being betrayed by someone you love. In addition to metaphorical lyricism, Tiffany includes a stark, incredibly relatable question as well: “If you wanted something else so Goddamn badly, then why the hell did you follow me here?”

This lyric proves that she’s not trying to pull this person back to her and, in fact, doesn’t know why he keeps coming back. However, the infatuation she has with his memory keeps her around regardless.

The instrumentals behind the bridge of this track exude the emotions you feel when you’ve been cheated on and need to scream into the void. It’s ridiculously relatable to so many people, and Tiffany Johnson truly emanates this story in a beautifully painful way through both lyricism and sound.
