Slayyyter

Trucker hats, DIY-ed clothes, glittery eyeshadow, and even one person dressed as a fish filled the line of people wrapped around the block waiting for a sold out Slayyyter show at the Brooklyn Bowl here in Nashville, TN for her Worst Girl in the World Tour. The excitement was palpable as people filtered into the venue, some saying that they were waiting since earlier that morning, packing in to the standing area and spilling into the outskirts.

Electronic pop duo Pearly Drops started off the night, filling the venue with synths, beats, and confessional lyrics. Their music is reminiscent of bedroom pop inspired by the 80s’ sound. The audience loved them as well, swaying along and cheering as they spoke to the crowd.

In between the sets, fans began chanting for Slayyyter to take the stage, and exclaiming every time a song on the pre-show playlist ended. The time eventually came, and the lights dimmed and a choir-like bass drone echoed in the air. “*PRAYER*” began while glowing rays of light shone throughout the whole venue, fans recited the incantation like a worship, chorusing an “Amen” before a cheer. The intro song, “DANCE…” started out the set as Slayyyter herself stepped into the doorway of her run-down trailer-park themed set, and the crowd immediately jumped into the energy.

Slayyyter has an incredible power that carried through her performance, striking power poses as she hit high notes, and growling as she leaned into the stage floor. No matter whether it was a song that was softer such as “OLD FLING$” or leaned into heavy rock like “YES GODDD,” the energy was felt. During the high-energy songs like “CRANK,” the floor of the upper level felt like it was shaking as people screamed and danced from the front to the back of the venue. The setlist felt perfectly curated with ebbs and flows, all songs from the most recent WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA ALBUM, along with unreleased songs from her upcoming sister album and even her version of “BIRDS” by Turnstile making an appearance.

Slayyyter chose “BEAT UP CHANEL$,” the song that started the WGIA era to close out the show. Bubbles and strobes surrounded fans, who gave it all their last bit of energy before ending the night.
